Gynaecology plays a critical role in preventive health, reproductive care, and the management of conditions affecting the female reproductive system. Routine check-ups, screenings, and consultations with a gynecologist empower women with knowledge and early detection, promoting long-term health.Gynecologists use a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Some of the procedures that are widely used in gynecology include:-

  • Hysterectomy or removal of the uterus
  • Ovary removal
  • Removal of fallopian tubes during surgery
  • Taking cone biopsies from the inner walls of the uterus if cancer of the womb is suspected
  • Colposcopy and hysteroscopy, where the insides of the uterus are viewed using endoscope like instruments
  • Taking biopsy or tissue samples from the cervix, if cancer is suspected
  • Taking routine Pap smears from the cervix in order to diagnose and detect cervix cancer
  • Ultrasound examination of the reproductive organs
  • Removal of uterus fibroids
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections

Obstetrician

An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in the care of women and their babies during pregnancy, childbirth, and after birth. They focus on both the health of the mother and the developing baby throughout pregnancy and delivery. Obstetricians often work alongside gynecologists, who specialize in women's reproductive health, but obstetricians specifically manage the pregnancy process. They are trained to manage high-risk pregnancies and births, and can perform interventions and C-sections.

Causes of Bad Obstetric History

Factors that contribute to BOH include:

  1. Recurrent Miscarriages: Multiple miscarriages (3 or more consecutive losses before 20 weeks of pregnancy).
  2. Preterm Births: Delivering a baby before 37 weeks of gestation increases the risk of complications in future pregnancies.
  3. Stillbirth: The death of a baby after 20 weeks of pregnancy and before or during delivery is another indicator of BOH.
  4. Gestational Hypertension or Preeclampsia: High blood pressure and organ damage during pregnancy that may increase the risk of complications in future pregnancies.
  5. Ectopic Pregnancy: A pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tube, which can affect future fertility.
  6. Infections or Placental Issues: Infections during pregnancy, or complications like placenta previa (where the placenta covers the cervix) or placental abruption (separation of the placenta from the uterus), can contribute to BOH.
  7. Fetal Growth Restriction: When the baby does not grow properly in the womb, leading to potential complications at birth.

Why is BOH Important?

  1. Preconception Counseling: Women with a history of BOH may benefit from counseling before attempting another pregnancy. Identifying underlying conditions and improving health can help reduce risks.
  2. Early Monitoring: Close monitoring throughout pregnancy, including frequent check-ups, blood tests, and ultrasounds, is vital.
  3. Lifestyle Adjustments: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, controlling blood pressure, managing weight, and avoiding smoking or alcohol are crucial.
  4. Medical Interventions: Medications like progesterone (to prevent miscarriage) or blood thinners (for clotting disorders) may be prescribed to manage specific risks.
  5. Women with BOH can have successful pregnancies with appropriate care, making it essential to consult a healthcare provider specializing in obstetrics for personalized treatment and monitoring.
Specialites

Prenatal screenings: These medical tests are conducted during pregnancy to assess the health of the mother and fetus. These screenings are designed to identify potential risks, detect any abnormalities early, and help guide the care and management of the pregnancy.
Routine Check-ups: Regular visits to monitor the health of the mother and fetus, ensuring proper growth and development.
Placental Problems: Addressing complications like placenta previa or placental abruption that affect the delivery.
Cesarean Section: Performing C-sections when the vaginal birth is not safe for the mother or baby.
Normal Vaginal Delivery:Helping women deliver naturally with monitoring and support.
Risk Assessment: They help assess the risk for conditions like Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and neural tube defects, allowing parents to make informed choices regarding their pregnancy.
